Special Needs Dogs

Almost every single day we're asked to take several dogs that have extra medical needs.  We have to turn many of them down - not for lack of space, but for lack of funds to pay the expensive vet bills. Sometimes we get surprised and a dog we thought needed just routine care ends up needing a major surgery, gets sick, or has an emergency. Your generous contribution to our Special Needs fund will allow us to provide that extra care and allow us to continue to take dogs whose vet bills far exceed their adoption fees.

You'll literally be saving lives, and it's tax deductible

Crash

Crash

CRASH

2 Year Old Male

CHINESE SHAR PEI

Crash arrived at the shelter holding up one of his back legs.  Even in his painful condition, this boy was just so very nice!  He hopped right up to receive some pets and attention.  We would have taken him that day, but because he had just arrived and was microchipped, the shelter had to hold him for 12 days so they could try to contact the owners.  He was finally released to us when nobody came for him.  A trip to the vet confirmed that his right back leg was badly broken.  X-rays showed the small foot bones were crushed at the ankle - probably due to being hit by a car.  There was no way to reconstruct all those tiny bones and tendons.  The leg would need to be amputated.  To make matters worse, the poor boy's eyes were being rubbed due to his lower lids rolling in on his eyes, so he needed corrective eyelid surgery as well.  Adding insult to injury, his ears were horribly goopy and infected and needed to be flushed.

Now that Crash's leg has been removed at the knee and had his eyes & ears fixed up, the dog is recovering comfortably at his foster home.  He is as agile as he could ever be on 4 legs - he has no handicap at all.  He is crate trained, leash trained and most probably housebroken.  He gets along with other dogs and will be fine with children.  If he continues to heal on schedule, Crash should be ready for adoption by our 11/14 pet fair.

Leo

Leo

LEO

3 Year Old Male

CHOW CHOW

Leo arrived as a stray at the shelter almost totally unable to see.  All of his eyelids were rolling in on his eyes causing horrible pain as his eyelashes rub on the corneas all day long.  He's also got a skin infection from flea allergy that has caused him to chew off much of the hair on his hind end and tail. He went to the vet(11/6/09) to be neutered and have his poor eyelids corrected.  His corneas were hugely ulcerated and needed to have scar tissue scraped off of them.  To top it off, his ears were hugely infected and full of debris.  He needs at least two weeks of recovery with eye medication and several weeks of antibiotics for his skin.

Samantha

SAMANTHA

3 Year Old Female

YORKSHIRE TERRIER

Little seven-pound Samantha came to us having been freshly spayed before we got her.  Within one day of being in foster care, it was obvious something was wrong.   She strained and strained when she went potty, and there was lots of blood in her urine.  A trip to our vet instantly confirmed what we suspected: Bladder Stones!  This poor tiny dog had to be opened up again so the vet could remove two huge stones from Samantha's bladder (remember she's only 7 lbs!).  Urinalysis also revealed a raging bladder infection.  It takes several weeks after surgery for the bladder to go back to normal and for the antibiotics to clear up an infection that bad.  Samantha also got her teeth cleaned and was treated for a skin infection.  The vet thinks that all of Samantha's problems were caused by a very poor diet and lack of proper veterinary care from her former owners.

Samantha continues to recover and is doing very well at her foster home.
